Art of the State: California (Art of the State)

This unusual series is a great addition to travel literature and a genre unto itself. Small, lightweight, and flawlessly designed and produced, it's filled with paintings, photos, lyrics, witticisms, and a text that explores the literary, musical, and fine arts essence of California, taking on a variety of topics, from Picturing the Land and Making History to Literary Arts and Modernism in California. Under Pastimes, for instance, is the Cult of the Car, with a history of the car's ascendance, a cover picture from The California Motorist of 1918, a Frank Romero painting "Downtown" from 1990, and a snazzy photo of a 1932 Deuce Coupe. But along with the beautiful artwork and the fine prose, there's a practical side as well, with a perennial calendar of events and festivals and a listing of California's museums, attractions, gardens and art resources, making this a wonderful companion for a California visit. --Stephanie Gold
