The long, beautiful peninsula of Baja California is full of possibility. You can sport fish for marlin, snorkel the Sea of Cortés, surf the primo waves of the Pacific, or explore the sere beauty of the desert. There are intriguing small towns, plush resort villas, secluded beaches, and vibrant tourist-filled nightclubs. There's whale watching and horseback riding, ancient Indian rock art, and a church designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (for whom a Parisian tower, another of his creations, is named), plus scuba diving, hiking, lovely lobster burritos, and eye-popping margaritas. It's all a matter of knowing where to go and how to get around, where to stay and what brand of entertainment best suits you and your budget. Wayne Bernhardson's guide to Baja clearly delineates all the options available. The maps are superb, the information comprehensive--with details, times, phone numbers, and prices for everything from transportation and museums to tourist offices and hotels. You have only to commit to the trip, choose your pleasures, and go. --Stephanie Gold

I must confess that in the zillion or so times I've been to Baja, I haven't once consulted a guidebook. My travel plan is usually to get as deeply lost as I can for the first half of the trip, and then spend the rest of the time blundering around, headed more or less in the direction of home. I'm much more apt to want to read about places I've discovered. So that is how I went about evaluating Scott Wayne's book. But in reading about La Fonda, one of my favorite beach-restaurant haunts, and Scammon's Lagoon, the destination of migrating whales,, among others of my "discoveries," I also realized how much more there is still to see. Baja California is an awfully good value in guidebooks: It combines a thorough accounting of everything visitors might want to know about restaurants, hotels, entertainment, and interesting places, with pre-trip planning information. Also, the book is aimed at an international audience, with transportation information from major departure points around the world. Wayne has obviously done his homework. Baja California has that "been there, done that" feel. More than most countries, the chances to have memorable encounters with locals abound in Baja. The peninsula is dotted with ranchos, wineries, fishing camps, breweries. Wayne gives us a handle on all these diversions and leavens his descriptions with historical tidbits and interesting trivia. There are excellent maps of the larger cities, and the major north-south routes. Also, the names, addresses and telephone numbers of special and emergency services are all included and easy to find. Wayne even takes pains to allay the visitor's fears about the perils of travel in Baja, and discusses the country's rather undeserved reputation as a land of banditos and exploitation of tourists. All in all, Wayne's book is a richly detailed, thorough treatment of Baja, which manages to do justice to both the east and west sides of the peninsula. It is a quality paperback with ample illustrations and wonderful color montages of the splendors of the landscape and architecture. Also, Wayne has included an excellent annotated bibliography of additional readings on Baja, including John Steinback's classic, 7-be Logfrom the Sea of Cortez. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
