Review
"Erasmus Kloman and his wife, Sue, travel to France every year. In this book, he not only takes us along on his trip, he shows us how to rent a barge and do it all by ourselves.... Since that time, I've been unable to resist any book that has barge and France in the same title and Mr. Kloman's was no exception, plus I was pulled in by the promise of recipes - there are 7 in the book. Some day, I may get to live out my fantasy on a barge, in the meantime I can read books like Barging in Burgundy.
This is really a how-to book, punctuated with anecdotes from his family trip - with teenagers! Along the way in his descriptions of the villages and places they pass he gives the history of the area and as mentioned before sprinkles in a few recipes that are specialities of the region. What struck me as I read the book - yes I'm ashamed to say it - it almost sounds like too much work! As I reflected on my fading fantasy, I realized that most accounts I'd read so far had been trips on what Mr. Kloman calls "hotel barges", rather than his chosen method of "bare barge". So, I remembered that what is important, even more so on a barge, is the journey, not the destination and the fantasy is returning.
We are asked to 'visualize the experience as seen through my eyes, so that (you) are in effect taking the trip with our family on board the Matisse.' To do that effectively, Mr. Kloman has divided the book, roughly into 3 sections: before, during and resources. In the introduction, he explains the who, what, when, why, where and most importantly, how of this particular barge trip. It, in effect, gives you a blueprint to design your own barging trip in France. The second part, divided into 4 chapters, covers the actual trip along with village descriptions, history and the cuisine of the area. In the third part, you'll find an exhaustive list of resources to help you plan, enjoy and get the most out of your own barge trip. Mr. Kloman is also an artist and his works are used to illustrate many of the passages.
If you've ever thought about a bare barge trip in France, I'd recommend this book as a perfect starting point. Be sure to visit the author's website for other books and to look over his paintings that are for sale."

"'Barging in Burgundy' has everything you need to know before you go, thanks to Erasmus Kloman, who has done both luxury cruises and the do-it-yourself type."
