Getting Around NYC

• In general, you should avoid driving in Manhattan but, if you must,
o stay off the roads during rush hours (weekdays between 7am-9am & 4:30pm-6pm) and remember that the majority of streets are one-way.
• New York is best navigated on foot, by taxi or subway (for subway map and information, see inside back cover).
• New York is a very walkable city, but be aware that addresses don't indicate the cross streets of a particular location (that is, you can't necessarily figure out from the number where a building is located on the street).
o So before heading to a site, always find the cross street first; that way you know whether to hoof it or take public transportation.

Know The Grid

• Manhattan's streets are laid out in a grid pattern (exceptions are Greenwich Village and the Financial District).
• Streets run east-west and avenues run north-south.
• Fifth Avenue is the dividing line between east and west addresses.
• Downtown is south; uptown is north.
o "Downtown" also refers to the area below 14th Street.
o Midtown stretches roughly from 34th Street to 59th Street;
o Uptown is the area north of Midtown.
