Heather Mccabe, Houston Chronicle, 6/11/1996
To Joanne Harrison, Houston is one of America's best-kept secrets, even from Houstonians themselves. She documents her reasons in a new edition of The Texas Monthly Guidebooks: Houston, a friendly handbook to the city's unique history and vibrant culture. Harrison did not fall in love with Houston at first sight. The Boston native recalls arriving here 20 years ago. Her first impressions of the city entered through the open windows of her unair-conditioned car, crawling through rush hour during an August heat wave. "I thought I had entered the seventh circle of hell,"she says. Few things have changed about Houston summers, but Harrison, a reporter in Newsweek's local bureau until the magazine shut it down recently, has come to appreciate the city's offerings -- and, of course, air conditioning.
Harrison has covered a lot of territory in writing this resource for visitors and hometown folks alike. "Houston is much more interesting than people think it is,". Fascinating.
