From Independent Publisher
Aimed at the smart tourist and new resident who want to maximize their purchasing power, Maverick Guides begin by giving tips on planning, transportation, packing, weather, package tours, when to go, and special considerations that can make a vacation (or a new beginning) a positive or negative experience. Next, Bone discusses the land, people, fish, and fowl. He amplifies and highlights the history of the people as they have developed and are affected by the changing economy, and he discusses their art and handicrafts and what is special to their spirit or nature. Recommendations on room, board, shopping, sports, night life, and special tours are given for various areas and important cities. Adamant in his claim that he grants no favors or preference to any restaurant, hotel, or travel agency, Bone carefully declares what few gratuities he has accepted. He includes an appendix of a helpful list of toll-free telephone numbers for hotels, car rental, and tour/attraction agencies that can be reached in the continental United States-a definite planning aid. His recommendations and descriptions are sound, up-todate, and appear to be unbiased. He overlooks a few suggestions, such as the excellent, reasonably priced take-out meals readily available in otherwise-expensive New Zealand, but the books are well written and researched. Recommended for libraries needing a new or additional guide to these areas. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
