Getting Around Montreal
• Most streets bear names, not numbers, and signs use French terminology ("rue" for "street," usually dropped when giving an address, and "est" or "ouest" for east or west of Boulevard St-Laurent). On streets running roughly northward, buildings are numbered starting from the St. Lawrence River. Some street names have widely used informal English equivalents (Rue de la Montagne/Mountain Street).
• Montreal is a compact city, with a central area only about 2km/1.24mi square and few challenging slopes. Walking is pleasant during most of the year. In winter, icy sidewalks can be a hazard, and appropriate clothing is a must. Underground passageways (see Landmarks/Underground City) offer sheltered routes when it's cold or rainy outside.

French is the majority language in Montreal and the province of Quebec, and businesses are generally required to use French in their operations and on signs. English is widely understood, especially downtown. You can usually find assistance in English, either in person or when calling.
