Before the end of that year he was working for the Museum of Systematic Biology at the University of California, Irvine. At the Musuem of Systematic Biology he at first assisted with, and later managed the Museum's collection of 26,000 vascular plant speciments. His focus was understanding the diveristy and distribution of plants in Orange County with the intention of writing a flora. In 1991, he was presented with an award from the Orange County Register newspaper for his efforts in local rare plant conservation, monitoring habitat loss for the California gnatcatcher and coastal cactus wren, and efforts to educate the public regarding the natural heritage of Orange County.
At the end of 1991, the author joined the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service where he worked as a botanist until the spring of 1999. At the Service, the author worked for plant consevation throughout southern California and primary task was evaluating the status of rare plants for potential inclusion on the federal endangered species list. Inspired by the need to increase public awareness regarding a rare species of oak, the author had published his second book, "An Illustrated Guide to the Oaks of the Southern Californian Floristic Province" in 1995. Currently, the author is working on several new books focusing on southern California plants and other subjects.
