Aging and its associated problems are of increasing interest and concern as the life expectancy of the human population increases. The importance of continued functioning of the nervous system in cognitive and integrative processes, necessary for maintaining the quality of life during aging, is self evident. The nature and extent of the changes that occur with increasing age differ considerably in different species and also in the various organs or tissues within a given species.
