This side-by-side, bilingual publication is the fourth in a series of atlases on the histology of the Atlantic cod. (Volume 1: digestive tract; Volume 2: respiratory system; Volume 3: reproductive organs). Volume 4 contains 211 photographic plates of specimens (some in colour) prepared for light, transmission, and scanning electron microscopy, along with whole mount skeletal preparations. The methodology for preparing the slides is described in the introduction. Cultured cod larvae are used to illustrate the development of cultured cod from hatching to 54 days. Light micrographs of wild cod illustrate later stages, up to metamorphosis. The publication is fully indexed.
About the Author
Carol M. Morrison was born in Leeds, England. In 1964, she received her undergraduate degree in Zoology from Somerville College, Oxford University and emigrated to Canada in the same year to work for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans at the Halifax Laboratory. She obtained her M.Sc. from Dalhousie University in 1968, then left the Department to work full-time on her Ph.D., which she obtained from Dalhousie in 1971. Her thesis topics were the ultrastructure of muscle in bivalve adductors, cod, and lobster. In 1971 she also obtained her B.Ed. degree from St. Mary's University. She joined the Faculty of the Medical School at Dalhousie University in 1971 as a lecturer (later Assistant Professor) in the Anatomy Department, teaching histology and gross anatomy, and doing research on the area postrema of the cat brain. In 1976 she returned to the Halifax Laboratory as a histologist, and has published work on the normal histology of finfish and shellfish, as well as on the structure and histopathology of tumors, micro-organisms, and protazoan parasites affecting fish.
